| Personal History | Early Childhood Kalina is the child of Marcus and Veronica Solwick and comes from a family of four. She was born on the USS Augusta in 2387. From a young age, she felt destined to serve Starfleet, which she didn't mind at all because she loved everything that Starfleet stood for. Kalina spent her early years on the USS Augusta and later on Starbase 900. She then joined her father on the USS Zodiac before ultimately joining Starfleet. Although Kalina had a pleasant childhood, she often wondered what life would have been like if she had grown up on a planet instead of constantly traveling. Despite this, she got along with most kids and enjoyed her time aboard the USS Augusta. During her early years, Kalina idolized her father, considering him a war hero and one of the main leaders for the Federation during the Divine War conflict of 2382. While on the USS Augusta, Kalina heard stories about her mother Veronica, who was the commanding officer, and her father, who was signed to Beta Antares Fleet Yards. At the age of 10, Kalina met a young man whose significance she didn't initially understand. As she grew older, she became slightly annoyed that her parents had arranged the meeting, feeling like she was being traded. However, she later learned that it was a common beta tradition. Kalina believed that Zaire Bryne, the young man she met, had also been tricked into the arrangement. She was further annoyed to discover that the purpose of the bonding was to secure the Bryne family's entry into Starfleet as officers. Although it was her mother's doing, her father took on the role of the villain because he knew how important Veronica was to Kalina. When Kalina was young, she wanted to be around her mother and admired her mother's adventures on the Starship. However, when she entered high school, she desired more stability in her life, so she joined her father at the fleet yards. Most of her siblings were already there. A few months later, her mother managed to bring the Augusta to the fleet yards, albeit for decommissioning. This prompted Kalina to take a short hiatus from Starfleet. Kalina was excited about the opportunity for her parents to be together and for their family to be complete. By the time she was 14, Kalina had already forgiven her father for the bonding arrangement. As she grew older, she began to understand customs, cultures, and the strong connection she felt for Zaire, even though she would never admit it to anyone else. During her high school years, Kalina focused on her studies and found it challenging to date due to others seeing her as the Captain's daughter and untouchable. She disliked this perception and believed that she needed to distance herself from her parents' influence if she ever wanted to find true love. Despite her attraction to Zaire, she kept telling herself that it was merely biology and not love, convincing herself that she needed to find a deeper connection. Kalina encountered a variety of alien influences during her high school years, particularly regarding the choice of love and who one can love. She learned that Betazoids have a stronger connection and a genetic bond that links them. Sadly, Kalina did not find love during her high school years. Instead, she focused on her education and dedicated extra time to prepare to join Starfleet Academy in the summer of 2401. Starfleet Academy During Kalina's first year at Starfleet Academy, she experienced a sense of separation and homesickness that she had never felt before. It was even worse than the year she spent away from her family. The academy proved to be more intense than she had anticipated. Although she had heard other junior officers talk about their time at the academy on the USS Augusta and Starbase 900, she never expected it to be as challenging as it was. It was a complete cultural shock for her. Kalina had a strong desire to be assigned to an outpost or station so she could live on a planet once she completed the academy. She disliked sharing a dorm room with three other cadets, especially since they were quite rambunctious, and she struggled to keep up with her grades. Despite being the admiral's and captain's daughter, she realized that she couldn't rely solely on genetics to become a successful Starfleet officer. Her first year was a rude awakening. She ended up spending most of her time studying and, after being on a planet for just one year without being able to travel to the stars, she realized that she missed traveling. She remembered how her father used to take her on small trips when they were on the fleet yards, always having to test pilot starships. She missed that experience. By the end of her first year, her parents visited her during the summer, but sadly, Starbase 900 was too far for a cadet to travel to, so their visit was limited to two weeks. Kalina spent the entire summer preparing for her sophomore year at the Academy. She enrolled in additional courses in tactical operations, command operations, and starship protocols, aiming to be on par with the other cadets. Although her first year was quite lonely, she found it to be rewarding in its own way. After her first year at the academy, Kalina realized that she didn't want to live on a planet. She missed the excitement of traveling, making first contact with new civilizations, and exploring the vastness of space. Kalina began to accept her role as a cadet in Starfleet, leaving behind the misconceptions she had during her first year. She focused all her attention and effort on making the most of her experiences. Out of the blue, her parents messaged her, informing her that when she completed the academy, she would marry Zaire Bryne and complete her bond with him. Initially confused and angry, deep down, she had missed him immensely. However, she was upset about being forced into an arranged marriage once again. In her eyes, it felt like it was happening all over again, even though she now understood that she had been engaged the whole time. Kalina successfully completed her next two years at the academy. It was a struggle for her to remain planet-bound, but she managed it. She constantly reminded herself that it was only temporary and that before long, she would be back onboard a spaceship, exploring the stars once again. During her time at Starfleet Academy, Kalina decided to specialize in strategic operations.
