Tuhjer stood in the quiet of his quarters aboard the USS Scharnhorst, surrounded by half‑opened crates and the steady hum of the ship’s life‑support systems. He unpacked his belongings one by one: placing a worn datapad on the desk, smoothing out uniforms that still carried the faint scent of his last assignment, and setting a small carved keepsake from home on the shelf above his bunk.

With each item stowed, the room shifted, less like standard‑issue Starfleet accommodation, more like Tuhjer’s space. By the time he stepped back to take in the room, the Scharnhorst no longer felt like a new posting. It felt like the beginning of something steady, something that might become home.

After retrieving a cup of coffee from the replicator, he sat on the edge of the bed, taking careful sips so as not to scald himself. His thoughts drifted to his earlier meeting with Captain Adrian Kellan. The captain had seemed busy, preoccupied, and most of the usual pleasantries had been set aside. Slightly disappointing, yes, but understandable. Tuhjer hoped there would be quieter moments ahead, opportunities to know the man behind the rank, perhaps at an informal gathering or shared duty shift.

Setting his mug on a metal coaster beside the bed, he returned to the crates. Soon enough, the once‑bare room would resemble his old quarters on 870, not identical, but close enough to feel familiar. Change was inevitable, and failing to adapt was unwise, as his father always said. Yet Tuhjer had also learned that racing to adapt, leaping before looking, often led to unfortunate outcomes.

He smiled at the thought of his closest human friend, Jack, who loved to say that not looking before you leap “can land you on your ass.” And despite fully understanding the concept, Tuhjer had indeed landed on his ass more than once. But learn from it? That, he most certainly did
